Brain photobiomodulation: the technological frontier between neuroscience, longevity, and mental health

We spoke with Julien Boutillier about Neura LED, the transcranial photobiomodulation technology that is revolutionizing preventive medicine, cognitive performance, and systemic wellness.

Red light and near-infrared have proven to be fundamental tools for cellular optimization. However, not all light therapies act with the same precision or reach the structures of the cerebral cortex. Together with Julien Boutillier, we analyze the science of cerebral photobiomodulation, the critical importance of dosimetry, and the applications of the device Neura LED in clinics, luxury spas, and home use.

Q: To contextualize the origin of this technology, how did the development of Neura LED come about and what is its scientific cooperation model?

Julien Boutillier: Developing Neura LED required an exhaustive four-month market study followed by a year-and-a-half research and clinical testing process. During that period we designed four prototypes until reaching the definitive version we currently commercialize.

As for manufacturing, part of the device is produced in Asia. After a year-and-a-half analysis, we confirmed that the greatest technical advances in photography and red light therapy with all their integrated functions are found there. The entire development has the scientific direction of René-Jean. In parallel, we have established strategic alliances with clinics, distributors, spas, doctors, neurologists, chiropractors, kinesiotherapists, and even dentists globally.

Q: There is some confusion about the categorization of this type of equipment. Is Neura LED considered a medical device or a wellness device?

Julien Boutillier: It is strictly a health and wellness device (health device). Currently, all companies working in photobiomodulation oriented toward mental health —including American brands with more than a decade of track record— operate within the health device category.

As it is conceived as a non-invasive support or complementary therapy, it does not require a medical prescription for its acquisition or use.

Q: In the market there are aesthetic masks, light panels, and body cabins. Why focus photobiomodulation on the brain and what differentiates Neura LED from an aesthetic or hair helmet?

Julien Boutillier: The radical technical difference lies in the wavelengths and power (dosimetry):

  1. Wavelengths (depth and dispersion):
  • 660 nanometers (nm): It is a short wavelength that acts at a superficial level. It stimulates oxygen and nitric oxide for a systemic effect. It is the only one found in conventional aesthetic masks.
  • 810 nanometers (nm): It penetrates precisely into brain regions. It is the fundamental wavelength for addressing mental health and neuroplasticity.
  • 1070 nanometers (nm): It achieves deeper and more diffuse penetration into brain tissue.

The helmet Neura LED simultaneously combines these three wavelengths (660, 810, and 1070 nm).

  1. Power and energy dose:
An aesthetic mask emits between 20 and 50 milliwatts (mW). A basic photobiomodulation helmet typically does not exceed that figure either. At Neura LED we work at 100 mW of power. The wavelength determines where the light reaches, but power is what guarantees the energy dose needed to obtain a therapeutic benefit.
  2. Direct vs. body action:
A red light bed or cabin offers an excellent systemic effect for muscle recovery, but it does not reach the structures of the brain. To stimulate neuroplasticity, the connection between the brain and the organs, and to treat stress or mental health, it is essential to apply radiation directly to the cranial area.

Q: You have emphasized dosimetry. Why is precision so decisive in light therapy?

Julien Boutillier: Ten years ago it was thought that simply turning on a light panel was enough to obtain results. Today we know that photobiomodulation only triggers a real biological response if administered in the right place, at the right time, and with the exact energy dose.

If the light emitter moves just 2 centimeters from the appropriate anatomical area, 50% of the effect is lost. Millimetric precision is the key.

Q: Does Neura LED use only light or is it combined with electrical microstimulation?

Julien Boutillier: The main technology of Neura LED is photobiomodulation. However, there is a perfect synergy with electrostimulation. In fact, our main partners in the U.S., such as Lionheart Health, are integrating our helmets into their longevity and mental health protocols alongside electrostimulating microstructure devices to offer comprehensive treatment of the cortex.

Q: How is the treatment personalized in consultation for each patient?

Julien Boutillier: The interior of Neura LED features an array of 21 independent modules, with each module corresponding to a specific brain region. In each one we can adjust the frequency (Hertz), power and speed:

  • Dynamic waves (e.g., 40 Hz): Indicated for focus (focus), mental clarity and increased cerebral blood flow.
  • Slow waves (1 to 5 Hz): Aimed at inducing states of deep relaxation, meditation and sleep onset.

To create a personalized treatment, the professional performs an analysis using quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and a health questionnaire that evaluates parameters such as rest, concentration and mood on a scale of 1 to 10. With this data, a tailored protocol is configured for the 21 modules. After 2 or 3 months of use (3-4 times per week), the qEEG is repeated to objectively record clinical progress.

Q: For those who use it directly, does it have preset programs?

Julien Boutillier: Yes, the console of Neura LED includes 5 preconfigured protocols:

  1. SLEEP: To induce rest and optimize sleep quality.
  2. LONGEVITY: Cellular and neurovascular stimulation for brain maintenance.
  3. CLARITY: Promotes mental clearing.
  4. FOCUS: To increase concentration at work.
  5. MEDITATION: Balances brain waves to reduce stress.

Q: What is the usage protocol and recommended duration?

Julien Boutillier: We recommend sessions of 10 to 20 minutes maximum, 3 to 4 times per week. The initial treatment usually lasts 2 to 3 months. As it is not an invasive therapy, once the benefits are achieved you can move to a maintenance phase of 1 session per week.

Q: Does the user need to remain still during the application?

Julien Boutillier: It depends on the objective:

  • For relaxation or sleep programs (SLEEP, MEDITATION), it is essential to be calm, resting or reading.
  • For performance programs (FOCUS, CLARITY), the user can actively work in front of the computer. Neura LED it can be powered via a cable connected to a mobile phone or an external battery (power bank) stored in the pocket.

Q: What immediate sensations does the user experience?

Julien Boutillier: Photobiomodulation acts on mitochondrial function, ATP, and blood circulation. In a single 20-minute session with an active program, the user perceives an increase in cellular energy and mental clarity very similar to the effect of a coffee, but through the physiological activation of their own metabolism.

Q: If someone decided to use Neura LED several hours a day to accelerate results, could it be harmful?

Julien Boutillier: Just as drinking 10 coffees doesn't make you 10 times more efficient, an excess of light can saturate the cell or cause slight headaches. That's why, when acquiring the device, a responsible use and safety agreement is signed. Light does not cause structural damage or mental disorders, but effectiveness depends on discipline in dosimetry.

Q: What is Neura LED's distribution model?

Julien Boutillier: We operate through a model B2B2C. It is currently sold in France (our main market), the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, and Sweden.

We sell to longevity clinics, neurology practices, physiotherapy centers, high-end spas (such as the LVMH group or Dermot Frost Spa for the treatment of jet lag). In turn, professionals rent the device Neura LED to their patients for 2 or 4 weeks so they can complete the sessions comfortably at home. If the patient wishes, they can purchase their own unit through the center or distributor.

Q: In conclusion, why is mental and brain health the central pillar of longevity?

Julien Boutillier: Stress is the number one accelerator of aging and bodily deterioration. The body is not divided into isolated compartments: if you are stressed or don't sleep well, it will show in your skin, your digestion, and your joints.

By regulating the brain's bioelectrical frequencies through photobiomodulation with Neura LED, we induce the nervous system toward a state of calm and self-regulation that positively impacts the entire body.
