Halcyon Spa: immersive experience and sensory wellness

Immersive wellness and sensory design continue to gain prominence in the new generation of urban hotels. In Barcelona, the marina-front resort SLS Barcelona has presented Halcyon Spa, a space designed to transform the wellness experience within the hotel and reinforce its concept as a lifestyle destination by the sea.

The establishment, with 471 rooms and opened in May last year in Port Fòrum, was designed by the studio Rockwell Group, with the architecture of b720 Fermín Vázquez Architects and gastronomic interiors by AvroKO. In this new phase of the project, the spa is conceived as an extension of the hotel's creative universe, where light, water and atmosphere mark the visitor's journey.

The design of Halcyon Spa is inspired by the way light transforms as it interacts with water. The experience begins in a bright reception area that contrasts with progressively more intimate and enveloping spaces. After the main entrance, guests pass through a blue tunnel with translucent panels that evoke the movement of the sea and anticipate the immersive nature of the journey.

The spa has four treatment cabins, including a double suite with a private Jacuzzi, as well as a relaxation room and a thermal circuit with saunas and steam baths. At the centre of the thermal area is a circular marble platform under an illuminated ceiling, conceived as a meeting point and a pause in the wellness ritual.

One of the most unique elements is its pool inspired by the cenotes, the well-known natural water reservoirs found in some regions of the world. This space recreates a cave atmosphere, with a rain effect waterfall and a digital background that gives an almost cinematographic dimension to the aquatic experience.

The treatment proposal is developed in collaboration with the cosmetics company Sepai, founded in Barcelona and known for its advanced, results-oriented formulas. The menu includes facial and body rituals that combine restorative skin care, aromatherapy, music and fluid massage techniques to create a multi-sensory experience aimed at restoring physical and mental balance. Among them is “Ray of Light”, a holistic treatment designed to reactivate the senses.

Also on offer is a 30-minute express facial, “The Fast and The Fabulous”, designed to provide immediate radiance before events or nights out, a trend that is increasingly present in urban hotels where wellness is integrated into the guest's social agenda.

The spa also incorporates shared experiences, such as the “Shine then Dine” programme, which combines a treatment for two people with a gourmet dinner served in the same space, reinforcing the idea of wellness as a complete experience that integrates gastronomy, ambience and personal care.

According to Pedro Catarino, head of wellness at the hotel, the aim of the new space is to bring an additional dimension to the concept of the urban beachfront resort. The proposal seeks to create an environment where high-performance treatments, immersive design and a sophisticated atmosphere are integrated to offer a wellness experience consistent with the hotel's identity.

SLS Hotels & Resorts has chosen Barcelona for its first establishment in Europe. The brand currently has destinations in international cities and tourist enclaves such as Beverly Hills, Miami, Bahamas, Cancun, Dubai and Buenos Aires, and plans new openings in Madrid and Punta del Este. The chain is part of the creative hospitality company Ennismore, created in 2021 in partnership with Accor, which holds the majority stake.

The opening of Halcyon Spa reflects a clear evolution within the hotel sector: wellness is no longer limited to a complementary service, but is becoming a central element in the design of the guest experience, especially in urban destinations where the search for wellness, aesthetics and sensoriality is gaining more and more weight.
