The problem appears when we stop drinking for pleasure and start needing that glass to relax, sleep, or end the day on a good note. What really happens in the body and how to change such a deeply ingrained habit.

There is a scene that is part of many people's daily lives: work ends, dinner arrives, a bottle is opened, and a glass is poured. No celebration is needed. It's summer, it's Friday, it's hot, we're on vacation, or simply it's been a long day. The glass marks the end of the workday and produces that immediate feeling of “now, yes, I can disconnect.”.

Precisely for that reason, it's so hard to question it.

A glass of wine can provide pleasure, facilitate a subjective sense of relaxation, and be part of a gastronomic or social experience. The problem begins when alcohol stops being an occasional element of that experience and takes on a specific function: relaxing us, relieving stress, helping us fall asleep, or making the day end better..

That's where the question changes. It's no longer about whether a glass of wine is good or bad. It's about understanding what we're using to feel better and what happens when that resource becomes a daily ritual..

Alcohol acts on the central nervous system and can initially produce a feeling of disinhibition and relaxation. That subjective experience explains much of its appeal. After a tense day, the glass seems to work like a switch: it slows things down, eases conversation, and makes the moment more pleasant.

The problem is confusing that feeling with a beneficial effect on the body.

Alcohol has a sedative effect, but sedation and rest are not synonyms. It can help some people fall asleep faster, but it alters sleep architecture and, in particular, REM sleep. The result can be paradoxical: the person feels that wine helps them sleep while their nightly rest loses quality.

This situation becomes especially relevant when the glass becomes a habitual strategy for coping with stress. The brain learns associations with great ease. If every night the sequence is “I end the day → I pour a glass → I relax,”, the glass stops being just a drink and starts to become part of the learned mechanism for reaching that emotional state.

You don't need to reach high consumption for a habit to exist. This may be one of the most useful questions for assessing our relationship with alcohol: why do I want this glass?

It's not the same to occasionally drink wine because we enjoy pairing it with a meal as it is to feel that we need to drink in order to disconnect. Nor is it the same to share a glass with friends as it is to automatically open a bottle when we're tired, worried, bored, or stressed.

The amount still matters, of course, but the function that alcohol serves also offers information.

A good test is to imagine that there's no wine that night. If the reaction is simply “what a shame, I felt like it,” we're probably dealing with a choice. If irritation, anxiety, a strong sense of loss, or the conviction that the night will be worse without that glass appears, it's worth pausing to observe the pattern.

The issue also isn't about turning any regular consumption into an addiction. A habit doesn't automatically equal dependence, but repeated habits can become entrenched and progressively harder to change.

A glass can also upset the digestive system.

The relationship between wine and digestion also has a lesser-known dimension.

Gastroenterologist Malena García Arredondofounder of MGA Healthy Digest, explains that wine is a much more complex beverage from a digestive standpoint than we usually think. It contains not only alcohol but also organic acids, phenolic compounds, and other substances derived from grapes and fermentation.

Therefore, reducing everything that happens after drinking wine to its alcohol content would be oversimplifying.

In healthy volunteers, the specialist explains, 125 ml of white or red wine stimulated gastric secretion more than an equivalent amount of ethanol. This doesn't mean that everyone will experience discomfort, but it does help explain why two drinks with the same amount of alcohol can produce different digestive responses.

It's also worth distinguishing between concepts we use as if they were synonyms.

"Reflux is the phenomenon by which stomach contents rise into the esophagus. Heartburn or pyrosis is the characteristic symptom it can produce”," explains García Arredondo.

The so-called “heavy digestion” responds to another picture, closer to dyspepsia, which can include a feeling of fullness, early satiety, bloating, belching, or discomfort in the upper abdomen.

So, when someone says that “wine gives them acidity,” the first question a gastroenterologist should ask is: what exactly are you feeling?

Wine is acidic, but that's not the whole story.

The explanation also isn't simply that wine is an acidic beverage.

As García Arredondo, points out, wine contains different organic acids, including tartaric, malic, lactic, succinic, acetic, and citric acids. Some components have shown the ability to stimulate gastric acid secretion in experimental studies.

Added to this is alcohol, which can promote mechanisms related to reflux.

The consequence is interesting: two drinks containing the same amount of alcohol don't necessarily have to produce exactly the same digestive response..

Nor is there a universally “good” or “bad” wine for the stomach. Reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines differ in alcohol, acidity, residual sugars, polyphenols, and other components. Sparkling wines also add carbonation, which can increase bloating and burping in susceptible individuals.

Individual tolerance carries significant weight.

And here emerges another of the gastroenterologist's most interesting contributions: “It's not just the wine, but the whole scene”.

A heavy meal stretches the stomach. If we add very fatty foods, dessert, coffee, several glasses, and shortly after, bed, we are piling up different factors that can promote digestive discomfort.

That's why a person can perfectly tolerate one glass during a normal meal and experience heartburn after a celebration dinner.

Quantity, context, and individual susceptibility matter as much as what's in the glass.

Wine is not a digestive aid

There's another deeply ingrained myth: that a glass of wine after or during a meal “helps with digestion.”.

The doctor's explanation is clear. Wine can wonderfully accompany a meal and be part of the gastronomic experience, but that doesn't mean it physiologically accelerates gastric emptying.

The association likely comes from a mix of tradition, subjective sensation, and social context. Having a glass after a meal can be part of a pleasant after-dinner moment and make us feel like we're closing the meal, but that's different from demonstrating a beneficial digestive effect.

Nor should we fall into the opposite extreme.

Wine contains polyphenols such as flavanols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins, and there is research on their potential biological effects. Some studies have observed changes in certain gut microbiota populations even with dealcoholized wine.

That doesn't make wine a health food or justify starting to drink to obtain those compounds. The potential effects of certain grape components can be studied independently of any recommendation to consume alcohol.

García Arredondo herself sums it up well: neither “wine is a medicine” nor “a glass is poison” are scientifically useful messages.

And what about the famous healthy glass of wine?

For years, the idea has persisted that a small amount of wine, especially red, could protect the heart. The argument seemed to fit perfectly with the Mediterranean lifestyle: healthy eating, physical activity, sociability, and a glass of wine.

The most recent research forces us to interpret that association with much more caution.

The fact that certain observational studies have found better cardiovascular outcomes among moderate drinkers doesn't prove that alcohol is the cause of that advantage. People who drink moderately may differ from non-drinkers in numerous ways: diet, socioeconomic status, physical activity, social relationships, healthcare access, and other health-related behaviors.

Current evidence doesn't allow recommending that a non-drinker start drinking to protect their heart. The situation is even clearer from an oncological perspective. Alcohol is causally linked to several types of cancer, and the risk doesn't disappear because the drink is wine, beer, or spirits. Alcohol can cause damage through different mechanisms, including the formation of acetaldehyde, a toxic and carcinogenic compound.

That's why talking about “moderate consumption” can be useful from a public health perspective to differentiate consumption levels, but moderate doesn't mean harmless.

In Spain, low-risk recommendations set daily consumption limits, but these limits shouldn't be interpreted as a necessary or healthy amount of alcohol. They are thresholds aimed at reducing risk, not guaranteeing its absence.

When the glass becomes a necessity

An occasional glass of wine can be part of a social and gastronomic life perfectly compatible with many other healthy habits. What deserves attention is the progressive transformation of a choice into an automatic routine.

“I deserve it.” “It's been a horrible day.” “I need to switch off.” “I can't sleep without my glass.” “It's just one.”.

These are seemingly innocent phrases, but they reveal something important: alcohol is taking on an emotional function. And when a behavior repeatedly provides an immediate reward, the brain learns.

The glass doesn't just contain alcohol. It contains a ritual: opening the bottle, choosing the glass, pouring it, sitting down, savoring, associating that moment with the end of obligations. That's why removing alcohol without replacing the ritual can be harder than expected.

It's not just about removing a drink. You have to find another way to achieve what that drink represented.

How do you change such an entrenched habit?

The most effective strategy doesn't have to be radical. For many people, it's more useful to dismantle the association than to impose a prohibition.

The first step is to identify for a week when the urge to drink appears. Is it when you get home? When you start cooking? After dinner? When the kids go to bed? When work ends? On Fridays? After a stressful situation?

The second is to identify what you're really seeking: relaxation, reward, disconnection, pleasure, company, boredom, sleep?

Then you can keep part of the ritual and change the content. An alcohol-free drink served in an attractive glass, sparkling water with citrus, a cold infusion, a shower, music, an after-dinner walk, or ten minutes of conversation may seem like overly simple substitutes, but they serve an important function: creating a new end-of-day signal.

It also helps to deliberately introduce alcohol-free nights. Not as penance or a “detox,” but as a way to see what actually happens with sleep, energy, mood, and the desire to drink.

If a person discovers they can go several days without alcohol without discomfort and, moreover, sleep better or feel different, they gain much more useful information than any prohibition.

And if they discover that reducing it is extraordinarily difficult, that they need progressively larger amounts, that they drink more than intended, or that alcohol occupies a growing place in their daily life, it's worth seeking professional help.

The conversation about alcohol is often framed in overly extreme terms: good wine versus bad wine, healthy consumption versus dangerous consumption, one glass versus abstinence.

The reality is more complex: wine can be part of gastronomic culture, of a meal, of a celebration, or of a social gathering. What is less healthy is attributing to it properties it has not been proven to have, or turning it into a tool for managing emotions, stress, or sleep.

A glass can make us feel better, no doubt. If that sense of well-being depends on repeating the glass every night, the immediate benefit may be building a habit we don't need. If alcohol also disrupts sleep, promotes certain digestive symptoms, or adds a cumulative health risk, the equation changes.

Gastroenterologist Malena García Arredondo proposes a particularly sensible idea for understanding the relationship between wine and digestion: “putting it in its proper place”.

It is probably also a good way to understand our relationship with alcohol. There's no need to turn a glass of wine into an enemy. Nor do we need to turn it into a medicine.

True well-being begins when we can enjoy it because we want to, and not because we feel we need it.

Nos ayuda a desconectar, acompaña una cena y parece inocente.
