More than 80 international experts will participate from October 1 to 3 in Madrid in the XXIV International Congress of the Spanish Society of Anti-Aging and Longevity Medicine (SEMAL). Geroscience, artificial intelligence, liquid biopsy, cellular reprogramming, regenerative medicine, exercise, body composition and medical aesthetics are part of a program that focuses on one of the great challenges of contemporary medicine: preserving health and function for as many years as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Longevity medicine is going through a stage of intense scientific activity. Research into the biological mechanisms of aging advances in parallel with the development of new diagnostic tools, data analysis technologies and therapeutic strategies that seek to intervene on factors related to loss of function and the onset of disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That will be the framework of the XXIV International Congress of SEMAL<\/a><\/strong>, which will bring together at the NH Madrid Ventas Hotel specialists from Spain, the United States, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina and Switzerland, among other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program addresses longevity from different levels: from the cellular mechanisms involved in aging to clinical prevention, diagnosis, tissue regeneration, exercise and aesthetic medicine. The breadth of the program also reflects a reality of the sector: under the name of longevity medicine coexist areas with decades of clinical research alongside much more recent technologies, some still in experimental phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the president of SEMAL, Dr. Jos\u00e9 Serres, the specialty requires an integrative approach in which health, functionality and autonomy occupy a central place. Prevention and medical follow-up thus acquire a dimension that transcends isolated aesthetic intervention and places healthy aging within a long-term medical strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biology of aging enters the consultation room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the main scientific attractions of the congress will be the presence of researchers linked to geroscience, a discipline dedicated to the study of the biological mechanisms involved in aging and their relationship with age-associated diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Guido Kroemer, an international reference in autophagy and cell biology, will analyze the evolution of the Hallmarks of Aging<\/em>, the framework that groups the main molecular and cellular processes related to aging. His presentation will allow a review of how knowledge about these mechanisms has evolved and what therapeutic possibilities research currently offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program also includes Dr. Steven Austad, a specialist in comparative biology of aging. His work with animal species that present exceptional longevity characteristics provides a particularly interesting perspective for studying which biological mechanisms can contribute to maintaining function over prolonged periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another of the highlighted names is Michael West, a pioneering researcher in stem cells, telomeres and cellular reprogramming. His participation will address new approaches aimed at modifying cellular characteristics associated with aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cellular reprogramming constitutes one of the fields of greatest interest within rejuvenation research. It is also an area in which the distance between the laboratory and medical practice demands special caution. Experimental results and the first clinical studies allow future possibilities to be explored, although their translation into safe, effective and regulated treatments requires sufficient clinical evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immunologist Derya Unutmaz will complete this block with a lecture dedicated to the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence and new biomedical technologies in the fight against age-related diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence, biological age and diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence will have a cross-cutting presence at the congress. The vice president of SEMAL, Prof. Antonio Ayala, will address its applications in early diagnosis, estimation of biological age and support for clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept of biological age occupies a growing space within preventive medicine. The proliferation of epigenetic clocks, algorithms and biomarker panels allows increasingly sophisticated estimates to be obtained about certain processes associated with aging. The fundamental clinical question lies in determining which measurements have demonstrated predictive capacity and which offer information of scientific interest without there yet being a clearly established therapeutic consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same question appears in the field of artificial intelligence. The ability to process large amounts of information can facilitate the identification of patterns and help the professional in certain decisions, although the clinical usefulness of an algorithm depends on its validation, the quality of the data used and its performance in real populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session of the European Society of Preventive, Regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine (ESAAM) will delve deeper into these applications. Its president, Dr. Mario Krause, will present a model of checkpoint<\/em> annual aimed at incorporating signals related to cancer through biomarkers and liquid biopsy within prevention programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liquid biopsy allows the analysis of circulating tumor material and constitutes an area of great interest in oncology. Its incorporation into screening and prevention programs requires, however, precisely assessing the characteristics of each test, its sensitivity and specificity, the possibilities of false positives and negatives and, above all, whether early detection manages to improve clinical outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The secretary general of ESAAM, Dr. Arseniy Trukhanov, will present protocols related to artificial intelligence, biological age and monitoring of parameters associated with aging in longevity centers and resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Manuel J. Castillo will address the differences between longevity, anti-aging medicine, preventive medicine and regenerative medicine, along with the clinical applications that each of these areas currently presents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program also incorporates new applications of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging and work on epistasis and personalized longevity, which will be presented by Dr. Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Lao. A human-authorized trial targeting certain ocular alterations associated with aging will also be presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regeneration, medical aesthetics and function<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aesthetic medicine occupies a specific space within the scientific program, linked to issues such as inflammation associated with aging, tissue regeneration and functional gynecoaesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ana Moreira, from Portugal, will present the lecture \u00abBeyond Aesthetics: The New Era of Longevity Medicine.\u00bb Dr. Mike Chan will address the role that research on stem cells, exosomes and peptides can play in future applications related to health and aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are technologies that concentrate a considerable part of the interest in the longevity and regenerative medicine market. Their common denominator is enormous heterogeneity in terms of evidence, indications, regulation and degree of development. For physicians, it is essential to understand these differences before transferring any procedure to clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Germaine Escames will dedicate her presentation to melatonin and its functions related to the cellular processes of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program also reserves a prominent space for muscle and physical exercise. Prof. Felipe Isidro and Juan Ram\u00f3n Heredia will analyze muscle function, with special attention to the ability to produce force at speed as an indicator related to functional longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issue is especially relevant in an aging population. Maintaining strength, power, mobility and cardiorespiratory capacity has a direct relationship with autonomy and the ability to carry out daily activities. Consequently, exercise occupies a central place in any medical strategy aimed at prolonging healthy years of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this same block, GLP-1 agonists will be analyzed from a perspective that includes body composition and preservation of muscle mass, in addition to weight control. Surgery will be represented by Dr. Alain Dutra, from Brazil, and Dr. Richard Lung, from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue zones and population longevity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Longevity will also be studied from a demographic perspective. Dr. Michel Poulain, a Belgian researcher associated with the development of the concept of Blue Zones<\/em>, will analyze the criteria used to identify populations with an exceptional concentration of long-lived people and will study whether Madrid and other Spanish regions present characteristics compatible with this phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interest in blue zones has grown extraordinarily over the last decade. Demographic research brings a different perspective to individual medicine: it allows us to study what combination of social, cultural, environmental and behavioral factors can favor a long and functional life in certain populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The congress will also incorporate the economic perspective of longevity. Tina Woods and Phil Newman, from the United Kingdom, will analyze the evolution of the longevity economy<\/em> and the opportunities generated by population aging for sectors such as health, technology, housing, tourism and specialized services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry will also be present<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pre-congress program includes more than eight workshops sponsored by companies linked to the sector. The sessions will address advanced regenerative medicine, measurement of inflammaging<\/em>, glycation, genetics, neurolongevity, metabolic supplementation and endolaser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the participating companies are European Wellness Group, SuPARnsotic, AgeBreaker, Fagron, BTL, Salengei and Ceivan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presence of industry is common at major medical meetings and allows attendees to learn about technologies, products and services that aspire to enter the healthcare market. It also introduces an issue that especially affects the field of longevity: the need to differentiate scientific training, technological innovation and commercial activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a discipline that works with concepts as attractive as rejuvenation, biological age, regeneration or personalized prevention, that distinction takes on special importance. The existence of a technology, a biomarker or a protocol does not by itself demonstrate that its use produces a relevant clinical benefit. The available evidence, the regulatory framework, the specific indication, the quality of the studies and the experience of the professional are part of the evaluation that should precede its incorporation into a longevity practice or center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The XXIV SEMAL Congress concentrates in three days a good part of the lines that currently fuel research and clinical activity related to aging.
